01Our approach

Start with the Decision, Not the Methodology

A strong design begins with the decision at stake. We clarify what evidence will change it, then select the leanest, strongest route to the answer.

How projects are shaped

Flexible by Design. Clear by the End.

Quantitative surveys, in-depth interviews, focus groups, desk research and technology-enabled analytics can all play a part. We lead with what works best, move quickly and respect the budget without compromising quality—then turn the findings into practical recommendations and a clear path forward.

Four Ways Research Can Move You Forward

  • Understand customers, consumers and new audiences.
  • Create and test innovations, products and propositions.
  • Refine campaigns, communications and brand positioning.
  • Explore new markets, their price tiers and size the opportunity.

02Why People Do What They Do

Qualitative Research

Get beneath what people say to understand the context, tensions and motivations shaping behaviour.

Ethnography, in-depth interviews, groups, triads, immersions and online communities reveal the patterns that matter — and what they mean for the decision ahead.

When It Is the Right Tool

Use qualitative work when you need to know why: a new concept, a category people cannot easily explain, a brand that feels off in a market, a behaviour that numbers have already flagged but not explained. It is also the safest first move in markets where the category language, category structure or route to consumer is still unclear.

How African Grey Runs It

  • Designed around the decision, not a standard group discussion guide.
  • Local and linguistic fluency in the room: groups and depths in the language people actually use, with simultaneous interpretation when clients need to listen live.
  • The right format for the question: depths when the subject is personal or expert; groups and triads when you need collision and language; ethnography and immersions when claimed behaviour and real life diverge; online communities when you need time, geography or a follow-up layer.
  • Recruitment that matches the market, including harder-to-reach audiences in cities and secondary centres, not only the usual capital-city sample.
  • Analysis that travels: we do not hand over a pile of verbatims. We look for tensions, jobs-to-be-done, cultural codes and the few findings that should change the brief.

03How Big, How Strong, Among Whom

Quantitative Research

Measure the size, strength and distribution of an opportunity with research built for that audience and market.

Online and interviewer-led surveys, testing and structured analysis turn robust numbers into a concise story people can act on.

When It Is the Right Tool

Use quantitative work when the decision needs scale: how big, how strong, among whom, at what price, against which option. It is how you choose a concept, size a segment, set a target, or test whether a qualitative reading holds beyond the people in the room.

How African Grey Runs It

  • Instrument follows the decision: we write questions for the choice you have to make, not a 40-minute omnibus of “useful extras”.
  • Mode follows the market: online where access and literacy support it; interviewer-led (face-to-face or phone) where they do not. In many African markets that mix is the difference between a clean sample and a convenient one.
  • Sampling with local knowledge: urban / peri-urban / regional splits, language versions, and category filters that reflect how the market is actually structured.
  • Testing that is commercially usable: concept, claims, pack, pricing or communications tests designed so a team can pick a direction, not admire a chart.
  • Analysis that edits: segments, drivers and numbers presented as a recommendation, with the limits of the sample stated plainly.
